The name Holland is derived from holtland ("wooded land"). Popular, but incorrect, etymology holds that it is derived from hol land ("hollow land"), inspired by the low-lying geography of both the Dutch Holland and the English region (Holland, Lincolnshire). Apart from coastal dunes most of the surface consists of polder landscape, lying well below sea-level and only kept from flooding by continuous drainage, for which in earlier centuries the typical Dutch windmills were used.

Amusement Park Duinrell

Efteling
Efteling is the best known theme park in Holland. It has been welcoming people to its "World of Wonders" since 1952. Holland's biggest theme park started out with the Fairytale Forest, which brought famous fairytales and sagas to life. Through the years, the park evolved into a modern theme park with the most modern attractions, a hotel and a holiday park. Since 2010 Efteling has been open every day.

Madurodam
Miniature park Madurodam is situated just an hour drive from Amsterdam and the tulip fields and is the ultimate place to discover what makes Holland so unique. Canal houses, tulip fields, cheese market, windmills, Peace Palace, Deltaworks: you will find them all in Madurodam.

Theme park and Resort Slagharen
Slagharen's first attraction was a pony park. The park later extended to include a Ferris wheel, carousel, pool, beach, whitewater course and two joy rides. The Western Village Stunt Show presents an exciting performance by cowboys and Indians. More entertainment is shown in the Circus Theater. Besides that, you are also welcome to swing along with the daily parade.

Artis Royal Zoo Amsterdam
Artis Royal Zoo is home to 750 species of animals, including zebras, giraffes, elephants and chimpanzees. Artis also has 300 species of trees and many gardens that blossom every spring. You won't find another spot in Amsterdam that has more nature per square meter than the oldest zoo in Holland.

Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp
The Rotterdam Zoo or "Diergaarde Blijdorp" as the Dutch call it, is one of Holland's biggest attractions. Over one and a half million visitors visit the different continents of Blijdorp, where animals live in their simulated habitats, every year.

Dolfinarium
Dolfinarium is a theme park with an impressive collection of marine mammals. You can witness shows and demonstrations with sea lions, walruses and of course dolphins every day. In addition to the shows, there's also a huge playground.

Safaripark Beekse Bergen
Safaripark Beekse Bergen is the largest wildlife zoo in the Benelux. Go on a safari and meet the African Big Five, which are the elephant, rhinoceros, lion, leopard and buffalo. You can also book a guided tour and learn all kinds of facts about these animals.

Palace Het Loo
"Paleis Het Loo" is a 300 year old palace near Apeldoorn. This former residence of the Royal Family has been open to the public since 1984. The decorations on the inside of the palace alone are worth a visit and the gardens are an absolute highlight.

Van Gogh Museum
No other place in the world has so many paintings of Vincent van Gogh under one roof. The collection consists of more than 200 canvases, 500 drawings and 750 written documents. Together these provide a fantastic insight into his life and work.
